CHAPTER FIVE

SHE DIDN’T SLEEP a single wink—just tossed and turned all night.

Eventually, she got up and phoned to check on Gabriel. It was a relief to find out he was stable and had regained consciousness.

Seb arrived early with hot pancakes for breakfast and a hire car for her to use. He was in a good mood and only teased her a little when she gave him a list of instructions, including where he was allowed to wear his shoes.

In a lot of ways he was easy to be around. It was easy to forget he was a prince. It was easy to forget he had a whole host of other responsibilities. Ones that would ultimately keep him away from her and their baby.

The first time she knew something was off was when she arrived at work. There was a TV van in the car park and a reporter was shooting a story opposite the main entrance to the hospital.

As soon as she turned into the staff car park one of the porters gave her a nod of his head. He walked quickly to her car. ‘You might want to keep your head down and go in the side door.’

She picked up her bag. ‘Why? What’s happening?’

‘You haven’t seen it?’

Her phone started ringing. She glanced at the number. Seb. She’d only just left him. Why was he ringing her already? She silenced it as Frank held out his mobile towards her.

There was a photo. A photo of her house. A photo of her and Sebastian in her doorway looking intimate.

The headline wasn’t much better.

She put her hand up to her mouth. ‘No. No way. Who took that photo? That was last night. Someone was outside my house?’ She didn’t care about her ratty hair, or the fact she was wearing pyjamas in the photo. It looked as if she’d just fallen out of bed to show Sebastian to the door—that implied a whole lot of other things. All she cared about was the fact someone had been hanging about outside her house, waiting to take a picture. Why hadn’t Seb’s security people seen them?

Frank glanced over at the crowd in the car park. ‘What’s with the different car—did you know they’d be here? Trying to throw them off the scent?’ He was smiling. It was almost as if he were enjoying the fracas.

‘No. My car wouldn’t start last night. Sebastian gave me a lift home. This is a hire car. My car’s still in the other car park.’

Frank was still watching. ‘Pull your hood up and duck in the side door. I’ll walk next to you.’

She glanced around the car park. It seemed to be getting busier by the second. She pulled up her hood on her cream coat and walked alongside Frank with her head down. It only took five minutes to reach her office, close the door and turn on the computer. Her phone buzzed again. Seb.

As the computer started to kick into life she sank into her chair and put the phone to her ear.
